DE&I Advisory Board & Webinar Key Conversation Takeaways:
- It is not enough to be smart to tackle issues of inclusion and racism; we must learn by taking the time to learn, unlearn, and listen deeply to the perspectives of those facing oppression and discrimination. Incremental change from all employees depends on buy-in and leadership at the executive level.
- Let’s consider a human-centered design approach to addressing issues of discrimination, an approach that begins with empathy. We must actively listen to our workforce and be prepared to take action in response to what we hear.
- We have been getting the same results for centuries, so we need to take new approaches; disrupt, take risks!
- “Cancel culture” creates fear that keeps us from building bridges; we must not let fear paralyze us — we must have the conversation anyway.
- Inclusion and anti-racism work is a marathon, not a sprint, and we are exhausted because we are being asked to sprint for a marathon — let’s adopt a more imperfect activism that starts with admitting we do not know.
- If you are feeling the smoke, there is a deeper problem at hand, and you MUST lean in. The fact you are feeling the smoke and not burning means you hold privilege and have the power to create policies that drive change.
- When we cannot depend on governments and institutions to create social change, we must leverage private organizations and capital to empower social entrepreneurs and change-makers. Through cross-sector collaboration, we can create an incredible impact.
- Before deciding to work with an organization, take note of the way in which it pursues its goals as it is suggestive of how it will deal with crisis and conflict within the organization.
