Understanding emotional intelligence is essential in the workplace. 85% of success is due to skills in Emotional Intelligence and Emotional Quotient.

An emotionally intelligent person can recognize emotions — both their own and that of others — and work with them to reach everyone’s best possible outcome. Through emotional intelligence, there are opportunities to succeed, personally, and professionally. Embracing the nuances of emotion in the workplace can have benefits, including collaboration among employees and a vibrant workplace.

Based on a report from The Institute for Health and Human Potential, people who possess Emotional intelligence (EI or EQ) can recognize, manage, and understand their emotions. They also identify, understand, and influence others’ feelings.

EI means being aware of emotions that can drive our behavior and impact people either positively or negatively. EI also represents learning how to manage our feelings and others. EI indicates strong leadership skills, such as motivating, understanding, and interacting with other human beings.

A few of the traits representing EI include:

  • Self Awareness: Understanding people’s strengths and weaknesses and are useful when receiving and giving feedback.
  • Empathy: This ability is especially useful in understanding how another person feels and experiences the world. This skill is especially relevant when their perspective is different from one’s own.
  • Motivation: Emotionally intelligent people require motivation to accomplish great things that benefit personal fulfillment and development consistently.
  • Self Regulation: This characteristic is essential for people to express themselves both openly and tactfully. Without this trait, emotional outbursts are more plausible to happen.
  • Social Skills: Gaining trust and building rapport with coworkers and teammates are vital to company vibrance. Socials skills are valuable when building and maintaining relationships.

Although everyone has their strengths and abilities in emotional intelligence, these skills can always be built upon. With critical practices and training, these traits can improve your overall emotional intelligence in the workplace.
